Environmental Impact of Breastfeeding

Earth Day

When we think about caring for our babies, we don’t always think about the impact on the world around them. But the two are more connected than they seem.

Breastfeeding is one of the most sustainable ways to feed a baby. It doesn’t require packaging, shipping, or manufacturing. There’s nothing to prepare, nothing to throw away. It’s made by your body, for your baby.

That doesn’t mean it’s always easy.

And that’s where peer support matters.

At La Leche League Canada, we support families every day through:

Because when families are supported, breastfeeding becomes more possible.

And when breastfeeding is more possible, the impact reaches beyond the individual family

Formula feeding relies on large-scale agricultural and industrial processes. Growing feed for dairy cows and soy requires land, water, fertilizers, and pesticides. Manufacturing, packaging, and transporting formula all require energy and create waste. Bottles, sterilizing equipment, and packaging add to what ends up in landfills.

Breastfeeding is different. It’s local. It’s renewable. It meets your baby’s needs without adding to that system.

It’s also not something families are meant to do alone.

That’s why community matters. That’s why access to accurate information matters. That’s why support, offered in a way that feels kind and responsive, matters.

When you support La Leche League Canada, you’re helping families access that support. You’re helping make breastfeeding more possible for more mothers, babies, parents, and children. And yes, that has a ripple effect that reaches beyond the individual family.

If you’d like to learn more, drop into a group, or connect with support, we’re here.
